DIABOLIK LOVERS 9th Main Theme: "COUNT OFF" - A Review (sort of)

I suddenly feel like writing about character songs on this blog now!

Two posts ago, I wrote about this Diabolik Lovers anniversary video that came out back in December. I was quite interested in the song that played in the background. Until today, I had completely forgotten about it.

I had a bit of money left on this gift card, and was scouting the iTunes Store for something to buy. (Yes, I still purchase music instead of streaming it) Out of curiosity, I typed in "Diabolik Lovers", even though none of the character songs have ever been available outside of Japan. But that song, the song in that video was there! They also had the opening to Chaos Lineage there, but since I don't have the game, I'm not really interested in the song.

(This is the cover art, by the way)

It's called "Count Off", and is sung by Kino's seiyuu, Tomoaki Maeno. I don't really know much about both the voice actor and the character, to be quite honest. For the past few weeks I have been listening to the KOF for Girls album to death, and Maeno's singing voice as Kyo Kusanagi was nice there. Kino's other character songs I used to listen to through someone's bootleg YouTube upload, and they were actually really good. I remember one of the songs was called "Destiny" or something, and the opening part sounded so nice.

I'm not very good at talking about music, but I am going to try my best to review this song. I don't seem to find many people discussing character songs online, so I will try to fill that gap with my blog.

In "Count Off", there are a lot of talking bits. Diabolik Lovers songs in general like to do this, usually for one line or so in the middle. Most of the verses are almost whisper-rapped. It sounds quite ominous, but it's different. I have no idea if the dummy head mic is being used, but I'm guessing it is for maximum sexy vampire effect.

I listened to the opening line, and I think this is what I heard: "When my eyes opened, you weren't there. I'll sleep one more time."

(Please do not take this as a 100% accurate translation, if I am wrong, please correct me! I'm sure eventually someone, somewhere will translate the entire song.)

Multiple times throughout the tune, Kino whispers something like "Shout this moon" in English. I have no idea what it's supposed to mean. He whispers it quite intensely near the end. Maybe it's to do with whatever game or drama CD Rejet are pumping out next. There's also this autotune bit in the middle where he goes "HELLOOO". Maybe that has something to do with the opening line where he says "you weren't there". Perhaps Yui gets tired of living with a load of annoying vampires and disappears somewhere?

The instrumentals of the song are quite simplistic. It has this creepy vibe, and it sounds like a song I expect to hear in some underground club somewhere. While it isn't my favourite DiaLovers tune, I appreciate that they're trying something different. The series does a lot of different sounding songs out there, but I feel that a lot of them followed a similar pattern. Often the lyrics were just the same "we're sadistic vampires" stuff and many of them had that same anime rock sound (which I personally don't mind).

In conclusion, I'd probably give this song a 7/10. I'm not very good at giving number ratings. It's nice that the song is available on the international iTunes Store. Once I bought a JP iTunes card, and everything on there seemed so much more expensive. I paid almost £20 for five songs, which was probably a bit of a rip-off, but the music was worth it.

(If you want to listen to the song for free, just look it up on YouTube. I would link someone's video but I don't want to get done for promoting piracy. Plus Rejet always takes unofficial uploads down, so the link would be dead after a week anyway.)

Hopefully you liked this post. It was a bit shorter than usual, but I'm not as good at writing about these sorts of things. I want to write more posts about character songs in the future, because I just think they're interesting. Thank you for reading!
