The King of Fighters for Girls - More Thoughts

I've been playing so much KOF lately that it made me want to write more about this game. In between battling Krizalid for the 500th time in KOF 99, I've been slowly making my way through the main story of KOFG. The character songs have been stuck in my head a lot lately, because I've been listening to them way too much...

(UPDATE: Apparently this game is closing down. Why? They're still releasing character songs for it, so why are they stopping it? The game hasn't even been around for that long! It's quite sad, to be honest, because I've been playing it almost daily since I wrote this post. The story's actually quite interesting and I was enjoying myself. I suppose I'll have to take as many screenshots as I can before it ends...)

I understand the game a bit better than I did before, and I've also figured out how to get the battle/training mini game working. This blog post states that the trick to avoiding any errors is to set your device's time zone to Japan, and that is correct. I just permanently changed my iPod's clock because it's not my main driver so I don't care if the time's wrong.

The mini game is sort of similar to the main KOF games. You just pick three characters to battle and train with, and if you have the special gacha cards it powers them up a little bit. I tried to use the same characters I usually play with in the main series, so I picked Bao and Iori. Nameless isn't in this game, so I just picked Terry because of his seiyuu. It's probably not the best idea to pick characters based on their voices, but oh well...

In the mini game, you just sit there and watch while chibi versions of your characters. Sometimes you have to tap the screen, but that's really it. I will admit that it's quite cute, and you get similar voice lines to what's in the mainline games. Sometimes I think I've caught them saying something directed towards the heroine too.

Afterwards, you get art of the characters in their training outfits, which is also good. At first I didn't like the art in KOFG that much, it just looked a bit too "generic bishounen design" for me. However, it's grown on me quite a bit, and I appreciate how many different sprites there are. I feel like this entire game must've been expensive to produce.

Doing the training and battling ranks up your profile and your affection points. It also unlocks side stories, but all I seem to get is the ones starring characters I don't care about. The requirement for Iori's story seems really high, but I'm sure I'll unlock it someday...

I haven't touched the side stories much, except for something I got in the gacha without realising. It was to do with some sort of event, and it was about the heroine meeting Iori at some school fair. He reminisces about his school days and it sort of hints that he's romantically interested in the MC. The story continues on, but you have to get more gacha cards to unlock it.

I cheated by going on YouTube and finding one of Iori's fully voiced gacha stories. That one had a lot more romance and a CG to go with it. The heroine invites him on holiday to Venice, even though they seem like they barely know each other. It was cute, and I liked the travelling theme. Sometimes it gets boring when everything's set in the same place because they don't have the budget to draw extra backgrounds.

I forgot to mention that there's also a cute texting function with the main characters. I spent a bit too long playing around with it... You get to send emoticon sticker things and you get an instant reply. It's like the texting part that's in Mystic Messenger.

The main story I've been continuing with at a snail's pace. My iPod has awful battery life and the game runs quite slow on it, so a lot of the time I just didn't feel like reading anymore. I still don't understand what the plot is yet, but something (I don't know what it is yet) happened last night when I read. Nagi keeps appearing and acting strange, but aside from that, most of the story is just daily KOF shenanigans. For some reason Terry's team moved into the dojo, I think they had nowhere else to go? I'm still enjoying the interactions between the characters. The heroine's just sort of there to do the cooking and that's it. One time everyone was going to hangout somewhere or something like that, and I think the heroine was like "oh no, I'm a burden on everyone, so I'm going to be boring and go home", then she got attacked by something and Shingo saved her I think. I feel like something similar's going to happen again and she's going to get kidnapped. Every otome heroine gets kidnapped at one point, it's only a matter of time until it happens to this one.

In the last post, I briefly mentioned the character songs. I've listened all of them, except for the one that came out yesterday. My favourite one is Iori's, not just because he's my favourite but because I just like the song. The one they made Terry's team sing is quite cheesy, but that's why I love it. This song is also good, I like Bao's part especially. Iori and Kyo's duet is also nice. I just like any character songs really, I like to mention them because I never see anybody talk about them. Another honourable mention is this song, it has a rap which actually sounds alright. I like the vocals a lot too. The only tune out of the lot I didn't like too much was Nagi and Kyo's duet, the one that currently plays on the title screen. They have good singing voices, I just didn't like the song too much. There is a concert video of some of the songs being performed. I haven't watched it yet, but it seems interesting. This game must be popular if it gets its own concert! I actually went and found the character song album on iTunes because I was listening to it too much. It was way cheaper than what importing the CD would cost. I don't regret my purchase at all.

I think I forgot to mention the voice acting last time. The voice actors are different to the ones in the older games that I have, but they still do a good job. I think the only characters who have kept their original voices are Shingo and Maxima. There are a lot of recognisable otome voices here. The voices sound rather similar to how they used to sound. At first I wasn't sure about Bao's voice, it sounded quite different to me. I got used to it though.

KOFG has a small international following. A lot of people want this game localised. There might be a chance it gets brought over. Since it's a mobile game, I think there's a slightly higher chance it'll be translated. I'm not really sure how popular KOF is in the West. If it does get brought over, I'm sure a lot of male fans will be annoyed. That does happen sometimes when an otome gets translated. It is slightly frustrating when there are billions of big breasted anime waifu games for men out there.

Thanks for reading my second post on this game. I'm sort of obsessed with KOF right now, so I had a massive urge to write more about it. My blog's been sort of neglected lately. I attempted to move it over to Wordpress, but it messed up all of my old posts, all of the themes looked so boring and flat, and it inserted a dumb sponsored post onto my homepage. It's probably best to keep using Blogger for now.

I feel like I should update the theme of this blog. This place looks like a relic from the 2000s, like it's designed for a square monitor. I also want to update the header, but I don't know what I want it to look like yet. Perhaps something DiaLovers related? By the time you read this, I might've already updated it.

If you're wondering when my Piofiore post is coming, I'm almost done with the game. There's only the Finale left to do now. I felt a lot more motivated to play this month, because Gilbert's route was so good. I'll leave my thoughts on it for later. Until then, goodbye!
