It's been a long time since I've posted, hasn't it? Well not really, it's only been four days. Still, it seems like a while to me. But I decided to actually finish playing a route before I blog about it. I just realised that for some person who doesn't read this blog regularly (meaning anyone who isn't me) would have no idea what the hell I'm talking about right now if I don't actually mention the game I'm playing before writing about it. In 90% of my posts I just go straight into things without actually mentioning the name of the otome at all.
So, if you didn't already know, I've been playing Diabolik Lovers on my PSP using my poor Japanese skills, translated summaries and walkthroughs to actually get through it. Today I just finished Subaru's route, so I suppose I'll give my thoughts on that now because I'll be too busy later.
Beware of spoilers down below!!!
I would've really done Subaru's route first if I could've done, but since he was locked at the start and then because I decided to pick randomly the next time round, I played his route third. But that's better than doing all the best routes first and then leaving my least favourite characters until last. Anyway, three's my lucky number, so I suppose it's good that my favourite love interest was played third, if that makes any sense at all.
This might actually be my favourite route so far, but that's probably because I'm biased since Subaru has been my favourite since I first started listening to the drama CDs last year. Even though he can still be really mean to Yui at times, he's still way nicer than any of the others. It actually seems like he cares about her, whereas I don't really feel that from any of the others.
The plot of this route was also super simple, like the others, but that still doesn't really matter to me. Subaru just acts like a tsundere and attempts to push Yui away, but at the end he's super sweet and romantic towards her. He pushes her away because he has super low self-esteem and thinks that he'll ruin Yui with his "tainted blood" or something like that. I think during this route she's slowly changing into a vampire anyway, and at the end she gets to live with him forever if she drinks his blood, at least that's what I got from the translation.
One of the best scenes in the entire game was when Yui finds Subaru alone during some masquerade ball and they decide to have a little private ballroom dance on the balcony. I dunno, I just find scenes like that cute for some reason. The romance in this route just felt more normal than the others, but then again I might be biased because Subaru is my favourite character, as I've already mentioned a billion times. (I should stop writing really repetitively!)
Sometimes I keep thinking that Subaru's way less abusive than the others and expect him to act like an angel towards Yui, but he still has his moments, although they are mostly in the first half of the route. He has such an explosive personality that I suppose it would feel like walking on eggshells when dealing with him. Subaru likes to destroy things a lot, like he literally just smashes everything up in Yui's room for no reason, but I think he must've felt a bit bad about that because he then went on to ruin his own room too.
I think that each route includes some elements from the first set of drama CDs, because Ayato's CD and route had the initial scene with his iron maiden and then Subaru's route and his CD both have a scene where he destroys stuff in the church. As for Shu's route, I never listened to his drama CD so I can't tell if it's similar to his story in the game, but I expect that it would be.
Like usual, I only understood about 30% of the Japanese, but I think that Subaru and Shu's routes were actually slightly easier to comprehend than Ayato's. Or maybe that's just because my reading skills got better over time... I'm on Reiji's route now (I picked it randomly but I was going to do his route next anyway) and his dialogue includes a lot of formal stuff and complex kanji so I feel like it's going to be a lot more difficult to read. I'm on the first chapter so far, and I'm doing alright though.
If it wasn't for the English translations I've found online though, I would absolutely be screwed. I'm glad that there's a big enough fan following for this stuff that are willing to translate things. In fact, I probably wouldn't have bought the game if there wasn't a translation available.
Anyways, that's all for me to write for today. I came back to writing this post hours after starting it and I can't remember the rest of what I wanted to say. It's almost Easter soon, so I suppose I should wish you all a nice Easter. Hopefully you all get to eat lots of chocolate! Bye!
