This Could've Been Better, I Suppose...

Previously on Misty's Blog: I completed my third Period Cube route, Libera's, having very strong opinions about it. Next, I decided to make our MC fall in love with a very trashy angel boy with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It sounded like fun, because I usually quite enjoy characters like that...

..............................................................................................................................................................

Yes, I decided to do Demento's route.  I had heard some very bad things about him in the past, so naturally, that made me very excited. But it was so short, it only took me around an hour to finish it! It feels like he was never meant to be a proper LI in the first place and was just added in as a hidden extra route just because. Oh yeah, I also somehow got the bad ending even though I tried really hard to get affection points for him. There was one time where I didn't get any and I thought that it wouldn't matter, so I didn't bother correcting them or nothing. I'm going to be writing about both endings in this post instead of saving the other one for my bad ending reviews. It's just so that I don't forget what happens by the time I go to write it.

So, are you ready for the insanity that is this route?

(Oh yeah, there's spoilers down below so don't look if you care about that stuff!)

If you read my review of Astrum's route, you may remember that I said that at one point I somehow got affection points for Demento. I didn't realise at the time, but if I had collected too many of them, I would have derailed onto his story path instead!

This means that the plot of this route is exactly the same as Astrum's, until about the fifth chapter. Then I think you have to make two dialogue choices for Demento until the story branches off onto his route instead. So basically Kazuha very much almost falls in love with Astrum until she ditches him for someone else instead... Although in the fifth chapter they weren't exactly confessing their feelings yet, so she didn't really leave him.

The route starts when Kazuha's in the Ark with Astrum and they meet Demento. Instead of them escaping like what happened when I played it last, Kazuha feels bad for the edgy fallen angel boy and wants to heal him. This results in Demento capturing her and Astrum does nothing to stop it, because I think his HP's low or something.

He takes her off to this forest and Kazuha's like "Maybe we should go to a town or something!" and Demento refuses and tells her that they're camping out instead. They have a little conversation together and Kazuha is just really nice to him even though he's an absolute scumbag and any normal person would either be absolutely angry with him or just scared that he's gonna kill them. Demento tells her that he kills people because he thinks it's fun and it makes him feel alive. That's all. There's no depressing backstory or anything that shaped him, he just thinks it's fun. Kazuha's like "Killing's bad!" but of course he's not gonna listen to her.

The next day, Demento drags Kazuha into the Ark so that they can do some quests or something. They fight against a monster but Kazuha's magical Almighty Amadeus powers don't activate or anything, so Demento's obviously quite pissed. With a bit of struggling he defeats the creature and they get this magical scarf item that makes the wearer invisible. Then they're whooshed back to the real world.

Waking up, Kazuha feels a bit funny, so she decides to fall asleep. If I were her I'd get up and live life before she gets sent back to World V, but I suppose if she's feeling ill she might as well rest. Many hours later, she wakes up and realises that she's quite hungry, but oh no! there's no food in the fridge. Kazuha goes out to the corner shop to get something. I then predicted that she'd see Demento outside and that he'd work there or something.

My prediction was correct. She sees this worker outside the shop puffing a cigarette. He kind of looks at her awkwardly or something, I can't remember. Demento's IRL version is actually kind of cute though. His hairstyle's really nice, and he just looks way better than how he does in the game.

Kazuha follows Demento home like a stalker to his apartment, where she finds out that his real name is Minato Karasuba. She knocks on the door, but there's no reply. Luckily it's open a crack so she pushes it slightly and she hears Minato's voice. Once she's allowed in, she walks into his messy room and is happy to see him.

For some reason, she thinks that she can save Minato somehow from being a murderer, but I think he's too far gone for that. I dunno how you're gonna be able to save someone like that, I'm sorry. Kazuha's not exactly a therapist, she's just some random teenage girl who thinks that love will save the day or something.

But Kazuha's hopes of "saving" Demento are crushed when he tells her something along the lines of "You just walked into a man's room alone, so you should expect something to happen," and he actually kisses her (the CG here was actually decently attractive) and attempts to push her on the bed or something. Kazuha actually shoves him away and runs off. She thought that he was actually getting better, but she was wrong...

Why is this CG actually kind of hot??

After returning back to Shiki's apartment, Kazuha gets sent back to World V. When she gets back there, she runs into Femina and a few of the other angels. They're all like "Yay, we've found you, Amadeus, let's go back to the town together!", until they get hit by knives. (This bit was kind of funny because it was so stupid) One of the angels is like "Amadeus, run away and leave us!" but of course, Demento pops up and he says something like "You're not gonna get away so easily!" whilst Kazuha yells at him to stop. A lot of the other main characters have already been sucked into the Period Cube to live in the new world, so if the Cube is stopped, they won't be able to wake up in the real world, they'll just be dead.

Then eventually Demento decides to take Kazuha into the Ark so that they can defeat it and she can be sent back to the real world. They use the magic invisibility scarf to bypass all of the monsters, until it stops working right in front of a big boss mob. They run away from that and then run into Shiki. Kazuha's happy to see him until she finds out that her onii-san is planning to kill Demento and the others to make a new world for her.

He tries to kill Demento, and Kazuha thinks that he's actually gone until he pops back up again, after making himself invisible with the scarf. This is where the two endings split.

The Bad Ending

I didn't actually realise that this was a bad ending at first until things started feeling too fishy, so I saved the game and found out that it was in fact a "Merry Bad Ending" by looking at the save file.

Kazuha realises that both her brother and the person she's falling in love with are murderers. She and Demento order Shiki to use the Period Cube to create a new copy of Arcadia where Demento can murder people at his own will. They do that, and it means that everybody who got sucked into the Cube before gets to survive in this world.

There's a time skip, and we find that every day in the new world people fight Demento to get Kazuha back, but then they end up dying in the fight. At least, I think that's what the game said. Then Demento says that she's all his, and Kazuha says in her had how this was the only way to save everybody else from death, but that she doesn't actually mind living like this anyway. Shiki's also there too and he tries to fight Demento as well, I think?

This ending's a bit strange, I don't think it was as good as the other two bad endings I've gone through. I personally prefer the good ending.

The Good Ending

I think Demento and Kazuha tell Shiki to reset the Period Cube, and for some reason he's actually willing to do it without a fight? But Demento only wants Kazuha and the others to be sent back, because him and Shiki have both committed murders in the game, so they wouldn't be welcome in real life society. Kazuha really doesn't want that, so her brother pulls her aside for a private chat and asks her if she loves him. She replies that she's not really sure, but it's quite obvious that she does like him.

She gets sent back into the real world by Shiki afterwards. As soon as she wakes up she rushes into Minato's apartment. Luckily the door was left open slightly again! Minato's lying on the floor and she begs him to wake up. I honestly thought that they were gonna kill Demento off at this point, but no, he wakes up. The only catch is that he has absolutely no memories whatsoever.

Then the credits roll, and the next scene is a time skip. Kazuha says that everybody who was put into the Period Cube died, including poor Hiroya and probably Astrum too. Oh yeah, and Shiki's dead too. She just talks about these deaths like discussing the weather, and we don't really get to see how the loss of her childhood friend and brother affected her. Also, she mentions that there was a small investigation into these deaths. Seriously though, shouldn't the police have been investigating these weird comas right from the start? It surely couldn't have been that hard to figure out that they all played the same MMO and draw some connections from that.

Kazuha meets her new boyfriend Minato out for a date. Since his memories have been erased, he's no longer a crazy psychopath, just a slight dickhead instead. They kiss and say all this lovey-dovey stuff, and everything's all good, I suppose. Kazuha doesn't really tell Minato about what happened in the game, I don't think.

This ending was alright, but I wish they'd gone more into the repercussions of all this and how the deaths affected everyone. I like the amnesia trope in otome games, but it means that Demento just gets away with all that he's done. I know nobody would believe Kazuha if she said that they were all trapped in a video game, but she could at least tell the police about something. I suppose she wouldn't want Minato to be stuck in prison for years, so she wouldn't tell anyone. She doesn't really have any evidence for the case either.

This route should've been longer! I like Demento because he's such a loser that it's interesting, so I really wanted more. I thought that the romance in Radius' route was too quick, but here it's even worse. I dunno why Kazuha falls for him at all, because she's a goody-two-shoes and he's a serial killer. The romance would've been better if the MC was different, like maybe if she was a bit morally messed up or if she was a PKer too. Like maybe they could've made Kazuha accidentally kill someone (I dunno how though because her level is so low) and then she gets ostracised or something, but then she meets Demento and they fall in love, and she realises that murdering's fun, so they go around killing together. OK, maybe that sounds a bit messed up, but it's not like it would be very easy to redeem Demento in any way. Kazuha's just the opposite of him so I don't think their romance really makes much sense.

I suppose it kept me entertained for an hour, so that's alright. At least actually gave him a route though. I hate it when the villains in otome games are so interesting, but you have to wait for a fan-disc to actually be able to date them.

In conclusion, this route was OK. Demento's alright but Kazuha is just not the right fit for him. There, I'm done.

................................................................................................................................................................

Next time on Misty's World: (There's no point in me putting this here, but I just want it for consistency) I'm going to do another route, of course! Poyo-Poyo's route is locked until I do everybody else, so I have to choose between Zain and Hiroya. Hmmm.... I don't think I can pick!

I just read somewhere that this game was directed by the same person as Sweet Fuse, so that's quite interesting to learn....
